Warning to anyone trying to get into Puyo Quest after Dec 2021:
Gacha stones are being made harder to obtain and support pools for events are being made smaller. Full power cards are being released in excess that completely overshadow already hard to get fest cards (on release). Most gacha stone rewards for technical maps have been replaced with easy to obtain items. The start will be a lot rougher prior to the Super PPQ update. The update added a lot of QoL changes such as a speed up option to make grinding regular stages faster at the cost of making gacha stones rarer.
As for the game itself... its just alright. Building decks and clearing technical maps with only improvisation is satisfying but you can only do so much with starter cards; especially when you will never have enough gacha stones for support cards to participate in events. They give away limited time gacha tickets but outside of collab and anniversary events, the handouts are not very generous like other gacha games with the exception of anniversary events.
*Edit 2023: Having played for a two extra years, after the Super PPQ update; the event support pools seem to still favour full power cards which is understandable, but the newly introduced 7* exclusive Full Power card rates are much lower with a 0.25% pull rate, as opposed to the 1% of normal full power cards, and will only be guaranteed after 320 draws (1600 stones) instead of the usual 100 (500 stones).
New technical maps released feel like they are exclusively made for Cross Ability or Full Power cards with enemy waves having very specific resistances and status inflicting attacks.
And something important: Google play's region lock has finally hit all countries, dating all the way back to July 2022 I've heard in the West. So if you're willing to whale and don't have a second phone to bypass the payment lock then you're going to have to conserve stones like crazy.
If you want sound: Make sure your phone's Notification Sound is up. For some reason the app's sound is tied to this setting rather than regular sound unlike most games.
I started in January last year and I watch the information streams (They're a lot of fun with the voice actors, but Japanese only cause well, duh).
With the renewal, the UI got a much needed overhaul.
Pros:
+Easy to pick up, Hard to Master.
+Let's you take your time thinking unlike PAD.
+Includes normal Puyo now as well!
+Lots of freebie tickets for pulling the PuyoFes Cards, recently added 10% Full Power and Ability Tickets as well but those freebies are rarer than Fes
+You can get by without the 'super' FP and Ability cards with the right combinations. Some events seem to be designed to be Hard specifically for them, but you could possibly still get by without.
+While you generally need dupes to upgrade to 7☆, there is a generic in the form of Wilds.
Cons
- While they are guaranteed after 10 10-pulls usually, its kind of expensive especially now that the free gems have decreased in favor of tickets.
-They gave us access to Wild 60s (for FP/Ability cards) and then took them away. Something about trying to figure out game balance. I'm sure they'll come back but unsure when.
Neutral
•Bunch of stuff only accessible being in a guild. There are english guilds out there, but you'll have to go looking for their discord or whatever. Stuff like Gardening and Mega Thief Raid for the new super Tokkun upgrades.
•Not a con for me, but for most people here: Only available in Japanese. There is some translations on Puyo Nexus but you gotta really dig for them which is a shame.
I'll edit if i remember more, but overall I still enjoy playin even if i cant be on top. I can still be casual about playing which is more important to me anyway.
A really neat game!
The graphics in this game are absolutely adorable! (It might be worth it to play this game for the graphics alone www)
The game is also pretty generous when it comes to giving out gacha tickets. You can get plenty just by playing the game and completing missions.
Gameplay is quite fun. It's pretty much your typical match-3 game. (Well, I guess match-4 in this case (ゝ∀・) ) Although, there are certain stages that spice the gameplay up a bit. There's one type of stage where you have to do certain things (like getting a 4-combo or popping puyo of a certain color) to break the enemy's shield so you can attack them directly.
In conclusion, I definitely think everyone should give this game a try!
(Sorry if this review is messy, I'm not quite used to writing reviews #^_^#)
Since i am a puyo puyo fan, this is amazing! Here's some pros and cons for me. [no i am not biased]
Pro's: 1. The collabs are amazing with favorite animes to go through.
2. Compile characters make a return with (some) design changes.
Cons: 1. It can be really hard to get an exclusive character. Take it from me, wasting all my magic stones for a limited time character.
2. The Tower of Steam and Darkness event is extremely hard! my advice is to power up your team a lot to enter.
3. Fest characters have a 48 cost, and needs five 50 wildsans to 7 star them. wait until you have reached five to 7 star them fully instead of waiting.
Overall, a very successful game.
Ive been playing this game since like 2018-ish and I will say while I adore the graphics, voices, and artwork as well as collabs in this game. The devs are SO STINGY with the stones. The gacha rates are also hot garbage and rarely do they ever guarantee you get a good pull, let alone cards you want. Once you clear some of the main levels or challenges the game will hardly reward you if at all and considering how hard it is to even obtain gacha currency it isn't worth anyone's time. It used to be good and better but now unless you have dedicated years to this game like others have I do not recommend even bothering unless you care about the story or just wanna kill time with another gacha game.
Of course I think highly of this game, it's Puyo Puyo after all.
Normally I'm not really into gacha-type games, but with the daily free gacha and huge cast of well-designed characters, each pull is worth it. Just... Don't spend any actual money if you don't wanna develop a gambling addiction, but that's just an issue with gacha as a whole.
The only thing I haven't rated with a 5 is the storyline, but the only reason is that I can't really understand anything that hasn't been translated already.
Last but not least...
Gimme a Sir Wilde so I can get my hands on 7-star Dazzling Satan goddamMIT--
Puyo Puyo is one of SEGA's most successful franchises which I've been a fan of for a long time now and was super happy to find this game
So many cute and epic characters to pick from to build your team and almost ALL of them have great voiceovers. ヾ(*´∀ ˋ*)ノ
Gameplay is pretty easy and addictive~ match 3 elimination and setting off pre-made chains which boosts your charas' power to fight enemies.
You get 1 free gacha pull everyday and the gacha rate is pretty generous, too.
And the collabs are so cool~ PQ/P5, Vocaloid, Haikyuu~ (っ´ω`c)♡
Overall a great gacha game for a PuyoPuyo fan (ゝ∀・)
I think it is probably one of the best mobile games I've ever played. I couldn't get into those RPG gatchas, they were too slow and uninteresting for me. Puyo Quest has very quick menus and battling systems, which make it very fun. Also, the characters are very cute!
One downside is that the game hasn't been properly localized, and for new players it can alienate them from the core gameplay. But if you are dedicated to gatcha, it is well worth the effort to build up powerful teams.
As a gacha and puzzle game, it's really good! The game is easy to understand and play without having a translation. They have so many characters to choose from, either from other tvshows or from their own game! They also have fun events and updates so it really does feel like Sega cares for this ip! Would reccomend for anyone, regardless if they know puyo or not.
