SEGA MJ is, perhaps, one of the best online mahjong video games available on mobile. The game has something that other games do not have, such as commentators that fires up your game, hype BGM, agari bell when you achieve ron/tsumo agari, casino, bingo system, and various assists. The game is also lightweight in size.
SEGA MJ is perfect for beginners who want to familiarize themselves with mahjong. MJ provides assists that will help you in the game, like highlighting discarded tiles, recommending discards, and many more. However, the assists do not handhold you always, and you still have to think fast and make astute strategies to win. You can switch them off in the settings.
The game has four modes: free mode, event games, ranked match, and gambling (game with stakes, because on the other mode, you may lose chips but not get any if winning). Except for free mode, you need MJ chips to enter. Worry not, though, because this game is free-to-play, no need for a subscription or anything. You can get additional MJ chips by playing (and winning) free mode and putting yourself in the top 10 on the ranked match. You also can get tickets to enter a specific mode every day by log-in attendance.
For every three weeks or so, SEGA MJ will conduct an event, usually a collaboration of animes and real-life professionals. You may play the event game to win several rewards unique to the event.
The game also has gacha, but like many other mahjong games, it is merely cosmetics and customization like characters, clothing, BGM, agari bell, and cards. Mind you that the game is Japan exclusive, so you can not buy gold if you are outside Japan, so gacha with gold payment is unattainable.
Casino? Do not bother. Only play if you have Casino chips, which are only spendable in the casino, and you will get MJ chips if you win.
The bingo card system is excellent. Basically, it challenges you to win a round with the required tiles to make a line in the card (bingo) to win rewards. It is very easy to obtain cards with free daily gacha.
Overall, Fantastic mahjong video game, perfect for beginners and enjoyable for intermediate players. Customization is aplenty and generously rewarding.
I don't know what the hell happened. But, since the latest update, I couldn't play online. The app has been refusing me from entering a multiplayer game. I'm sick of playing with AI / CPUs. I just want to play with real people.
The commentators really fired me up, it even support offline mode & some assist feature that might be useful for beginners.
The game now support partial English & Chinese for in-game UI (everything else stay in Japanese), you can change languange setting from title menu.
